Doesn’t it seem like these days everyone is completely obsessed with counting the calories in their food? Ok, so you need the energy from those calories to help you cross that finishing line at the end of the day, but how do you know you’re eating a balanced diet? Are you getting the right nutrients from the right food groups to keep your body happy and in top physical shape?

Well that’s exactly why we built: 3square™. 3square™ is a great new healthy eating app for your iPhone, that helps you measure and keep track of all the nutrition you get from your food, so you can enjoy a healthy, balanced diet.

Healthier eating is easy peasy: Record everything you eat and drink with just two taps, get feedback on your food choices and start improving your diet immediately.

    This feature allows you to reset personal settings, disable default settings and meal time reminders and edit the times for your meal notifications.

    Set username and gender.

    Set the times you have your 3-meals at for handy notifications. These notifications can be disabled.

    Track everything you eat:

    Track your daily intake through different meal times.

    Input the amount of portions you had from each food section for each mealtime and visualise the results.

    Input your water and exercise intake to live a healthier lifestyle.

    Look back at your past food pyramids by tabbing previous days in the calendar and view your progress as the days go on or reedit your food intake.

    By looking back at your past pyramids you will slowly refine your diet over time.

    Understand the 3square™ concept of a balanced healthy diet based on food categories and how the 3square™ app visualises your food intake in pyramids.

    Know the food categories. Read about each category by long pressing on the bright buttons to get handy information about portion quantity, helpful tips on healthy foods to consume and a portion guide. Use the information function to find out more helpful tips, learn about the different elements that make up the food pyramid and how the pyramid fills up.

  • visualise results

    Visualise the balance of your food consumption:

    The visualisation will allow you to keep an eye on your eating patterns and let you know where in terms of your daily intake you are going right or wrong. Depending on the foods consumed there is a different outcome. If you are unhappy with your results you can go back to the edit screen and re-plan your meal.

  • notifications

    The handy notifications will let you know when you have skipped your meals and prompt you to track food at the times that you have set your meal-time reminders at.

    These notifications can be disabled.

3square’s™ main objective is to influence you to eat right: to eat 3square™ meals a day focusing on the content of your meals, not the calories.

Balanced diet

We are not about a strict controlled diet but about encouraging you to get the right balance from each food group and cut down on extras. 3square™ app visualises the foods that you consume in coloured pyramids, based on food groups and portion sizes, allowing you to plan for a balanced diet. Through the visualisations you can see where you have had too little or too much of certain food groups and over time adjust your intake accordingly.

Food Awareness

3square™ is a healthy lifestyle intervention created to combat obesity and to re-educate about eating patterns and the value of food. The essence of the 3-meal structure has been lost due to variety, technology and a faster moving world, where culinary skills are not a necessity. There has been an overall decrease in calorie consumption, yet there has been a major increase in obesity levels. This information shows that people are eating less food but more unhealthy calories. Our focus is to get you to fill up all the food sections from the pyramid, encouraging variety and balance not just numerical values of food.

Freshness and Exercise

We support home cooking by allowing you to track the raw ingredients of each meal, helping you to bite into something fresh every day and feel proud by your results. No diet is complete without exercise: include at least 30 minutes of walking a day.

The 3square™ app is still in square one. We are planning several additional features and improvements for version 2.

Recipe Suggestions

We are looking to collaborate with a chef/dietitian for some yummy inspiring recipes, to be included in the app. Share your recipes on our facebook and twitter pages to inspire others.

Shopping list

A shopping list feature and more personalised notifications will be added to the app.

Set up a wider community

We aim to hit the android market. Our next big adventure is to create an app suitable for all smart phones, so that we can encourage a broader market to take on the 3square™ lifestyle.

This is an early version of 3square™ and your patience and feedback would be appreciated so that we can develop a super easy version for you. We are not about precision this is a guide to healthy eating based on the basic food pyramid.

Because we haven't released the app yet we don't have any feedback, but we can assure you that once the app is released we will have some great feedback from the users!

3square™ app started as Master Project at the University of Ulster aiming to help users learn about maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Siobhan Kirrkamm researched eating habbits, developed the concept and functionallity of the app, screen design, illustration...

Funding Sources

Developed further into a real app since November 2011, with the encouragement from Digital Derry, to apply for the Creative Industries Innovation Fund (CIIF), run by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.This grant enabled 3square™ to collaborate and work with creative talent in Northern Ireland to turn a masters exploration into a real time business venture.
